How to lose a job offer in 10 minutes
How to lose a job offer in 10 minutesHow to lose a job offer in 10 minutesFirst impressions dont have to be the worst impressions. Heres what could go wrong and how to avoid it in your next interview.Youve worked hard for this interview. You read up on how to craft the perfect resume, and slaved over a custom cover letter. You have all the necessary experience, skills and education for the job, and now its time to meet your potential employer and prove what youre made of in person. But beware a small interview faux pas can deter even the most understanding employer. Read on for examples of basic interviewing follies, and how you can avoid them. You didnt know when to stop talkingYour interviewer did not need to know about your recent break-up, every single detail of your jobs day-to-day, or how disgruntled you are that your parents moved to Key West and live on a boat.A little mystery never hurt anybody. Try to avoid disclosing personal information think political or religious belie fs, your relationship status, or your diet. Even if your interviewer is pressuring you for a tell-all response on whether youre a cat or dog person, its a flaw on their part, not yours. No matter how much you think theyre interested in the trials and tribulations of your social life, (or how interested they actually are) its best to bite your tongue when considering revealing anything about your personal life. Channel your LinkedIn profile not Match.com.The dog ate your resume, your alarm didnt go off, and there welches trafficYouve really done it this time. You showed up fifteen minutes late, forgot to bring a hard copy of your resume, and the CEOs last name slipped your mind. No matter what your reason is- and whether or not its true- youve already put yourself at a severe disadvantage. Its crucial that you not only prepare for the interview, but prepare for the worst. Plan for damage control in case theres traffic, you spilled coffee on yourself or your hairdryer broke. Even if t here really was a car accident on the highway, the interviewer is now concerned about your reliability and punctuality (or apparent lack thereof).Preparation is key to making a good first impression with your interviewer. Even if youre a brilliant candidate, the hiring manager will foremost remember that you stumbled in fifteen minutes late. You werent on your best behavior Even if youre just a victim of restingbitchface, a smile can mean the difference between landing the job and continuing to send your resume out. Think about your mannerisms too saying yeah yeah yeah, slouching, playing with your hair or fiddling are all off-limits. Think about what your great aunt (the strict one) would say if she saw you. Would she approve of your posture, or scold you to sit up straight? You werent confident in your abilities As a job seeker, you also must be a salesperson, marketing your skillset and positive attributes to potential employers. If you want an employer to have confidence in your t alents and work ethic, you have to sell them- and in order to do that effectively, you need to believe in yourself and what youre selling.Remember that youre qualified for the position if you werent, the employer would never have taken the time to schedule an interview with you. So believe in yourself and dont let something as trivial as a mispronunciation or a latte stain ruin the opportunity.

How Addressing an Alcohol Problem Now Can Boost Your Professional Success Later
How Addressing an Alcohol Problem Now Can Boost Your Professional Success Later If youre looking to get ahead in your career, going to rehab for an alcohol harte nuss is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. Time spent in inpatient rehab for any mental health problem especially for a substance addiction, which can carry a heavier negative stigma than other mental health conditions is not exactly a big resume-builder.What many people dont know, however, is that addressing an alcohol problem now can have apretty significant professional payoff in the future.A Harvard study followed several hundred men over the course of 55 years, monitoring their drinking habits. The researchers found that problem drinkers who successfully achieved abstinence from alcohol and were able to sustain their recovery experienced the following positive long-term outcomesBetter physical and psychological healthGreater enjoyment in their marital and family livesOccu pational successIt may go without saying that behauptung three very important positive outcomes are mutually reinforcing. Better physical and psychological health, or a higher level of happiness in a relationship with a significant other, naturallyhas an impact on job performance and professional satisfaction. How Long-Term Alcohol Rehab Improves Quality of Life and Employment ProspectsSuch findings regarding the link between successful long-term recovery from alcohol andjob success align closely with my own mora anecdotal observations as a clinician working with alcoholics in early recovery. Those first days and weeks of abstinence can be fraught with anxiety, depression, and other uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. As time progresses and clients stick with an individualized plan of medical and clinical care, they report higher levels of self-acceptance, greater connectedness to others, and reductions in withdrawal-related symptoms of distress. Moreover, in the first three months aft er rehab, many clients report they are successfully employed in a job or enrolled full-time as a student and have a better overall quality of life.Whats the explanation for these mutually reinforcing, job-related outcomes of rehab? Most inpatient rehab and intensive outpatient alcohol treatment programs spend a lot of time helping clients develop life skills, including self-care, tools for effective stress management, and healthy interpersonal communication. In addition to these critical life skills, a high-quality rehab program will encourage clients to develop many of the character attributes that employers look for when considering job applicants, includingPunctuality and dependabilityHonesty and trustworthinessResponsibility for ones duties and mistakesSelf-disciplineGood personal hygieneMutual respect and a positive team-player attitudeAdditionally, most high-quality rehab programs devote time to helping clients prepare for their post-rehab vocational lives. That way, clients ca n smoothly transition back into their jobs or find other jobs that better suit their commitment to recovery. This rehabilitative process can involve career counseling, helping clients practice for job interviews, resume preparation, and developing better organizational and time management skills. The Professional Costs of Not Addressing an Alcohol ProblemOn the flip side of these benefits of getting treatment are the exorbitant professional and occupational costs of not proactively addressing an alcohol problem. The longer problem drinking goes untreated, the more severe the problem and its consequences. The impact of alcoholism in the workplace, according to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, can includeTardiness or sleeping on the jobAbsenteeismPoor decision-makingPost-drinking effects (such as a hangover) that affect job performanceWorkplace theftPoor moraleRelationship problems with colleagues or supervisorsSuch alcohol-related issues will do nothing to help y our career, eventually causing even the highest-functioning alcoholic to take a professional nosedive. If you feel you may struggle with adrinking problem, it is possible that alcohol rehab will be an invaluable investment in your personal and professional futures. Rehab can protect your job from the negative consequences of your drinking and better equip you with the tools and life skills youll need to take your career to the next level. It is even possible that in rehab youll find a renewed sense of purpose for what you do or discover a whole new vocation that is more rewarding than you could have ever imagined.Anna Ciulla is the vice president of clinical and medical services at Beach House Center for Recovery.

From mindlessly going through life to being focussed on success
From mindlessly going through life to being focussed on successFrom mindlessly going through life to being focussed on successThe very first step I took to stop mindlessly going through life wasbelieving that some alternative for my mindless statewas indeed possible. You see, I didnt try to achieve anything with my life because I was convinced success was not possible for me.BeginI was lucky, a moment of semi-enlightenment hit meafter reading a book, and it opened my eyes to different possibilities. Dont wait for enlightenment, you may wait for the rest of your life.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraStart small daily habits that will help you to examine your attitudes and decisions. Meditate, journal, pray, read books which you normally wouldnt read that could challenge your status quo.We generally change ourselves for one of two reasons inspiration or desperation. - Jim RohnExtra polateThe exercise that finally ignited me into action was an extrapolation of our financial situation. Instead of being mindless, I was mindful for a moment and thought how my familys life may look like in 30 years if I didnt change my ways.No matter if you use inspiration or desperation, get this feeling of urgency to escape the status quo.Set Achievable GoalsMeaning small. Meaning you believe you can reach them.Pursuing them will occupy your time while taking away time from your mindless pastimes like watching TV, YouTube, scrolling endlessly through social media or playing computer games. Define what success isfor you.For example, at the beginning, I decided to lose some weight. There was no doubt I could do this. I had already lost several pounds. It was just a matter of continuing what I had started.I also decided to practice speed reading. I set no output goal. I had no idea what was possible. But I knew I could practice for 10 minutes a day. BTW, I almost doubled my reading speed in the first month.Break your goals into daily actions. The goals may be vague as long as daily action is clearly defined.Do Soul SearchingSo, I knew I need to change my life. I had no idea how to improve our financial situation, but I knew I had no choice. I set some immediate goals. And I began.Well begun is half done. This is crucial. You cannot idly wait for a meaning, goal or purpose to appear in your life. You must start your journey exactly where you are and gain momentum along the way.An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an external force. - Newtons First LawOnce you are in motion, its time to do some soulmusik searching. Why? Because you need something really inspiring to dedicate your life to it. Success for the sake success of sake doesnt cut the mustard. Everybody wants to have great relationships, be healthy, wise and wealthy. Very few actually do so mething to achieve those objectives. You need to switch from I wish to I desperately desire. You can find such a switch inside your soul. While creatingmy personal mission statementI went through multiple mental exercises to discover what really drives me and how I want to live my life. I found who I want to be as a whole. To my surprise, I wanted to be a writer, but there were other elements in my vision, pretty obvious, but equally or even more important to be a good husband, father, Christian, friend and so on.I put this vision into words. I started pursuing it. More doors opened. In MotionYou see, success is dynamic in its nature. Once you achieve something you start looking for more. Narrowing down to a single goal doesnt guarantee success. The goal may be too small, you will achieve it and wonder what to do next with your life. Or it may be too huge and you will get quickly discouraged.Thats why you need a vision, not a goal. Elon Musks vision is not to produce the biggest number of electric cars in the world nor to provide the biggest number of houses with solar panels. They are byproducts of pursuing his big vision to put humanity on Mars. When you are mindlessly going through life detecting a life purpose is a vain pursuit. You have no clue what that means. At the beginning, you need only the motivation to start. For me, it was this overarching feeling that I needed to do something, anything, with my life. Then take action. Set small goals and start doing something. Get into motion.I needed to improve my family financial situation, but I had no clue how. So I started working on my fitness, reading skills, and spirituality. Then I discovered a passion for writing within me. That mightve been a viable source of income. Eight months after getting that idea I self-publishedmy first book. It took a few more months to receive the first real money from this side hustle. It took me six years to free my wife and myself from our day jobs. I finally have some power over my schedule. Now, I can think about what really drives me - changing the world for better by changing people.Little ThingsMatterIn my pursuit of success, I dont neglect the small goals. I still practice several habits I started at the very beginning.Im building a new business that has the potential to grow to 7 figures, but my writing is the centerpiece of it. Once I have that business, my influence will grow and I will be able to pursue the goals of the size of Musks dreams. But each smaller goal is a building block for the overarching vision.Start. Keep going. Modify your strategy along the way. Expand.Anyone who is trustworthy in little things is trustworthy in great anyone who is dishonest in little things is dishonest in great.Luke 16 10Each step is necessary. Begin. Take action. Interviewing Basics for Engineers, Part 2
Interviewing Basics for Engineers, Part 2 Interviewing Basics for Engineers, Part 2 Interviewing Basics for Engineers, Part 2Part 1 of Interviewing Basics for Engineers highlighted the industry changes young engineers have to address when interviewing for a job. In part two, we look at some of the different skills employers are looking for in young job candidates.Soft Skills Matter The days of technical professionals being isolated from clients are over. Strong communication skills including oral, written, and presentation skills are critical for young engineers. It does an employer no good when clients cant understand what its staff is talking about, particularly when dealing with time sensitive and complex technical problems. Learn to summarize your work for nontechnical people and ideas in a way that will excite and engage those on the outside.Another important soft skill is the ability to work in both a gruppe environments and individually, and to agilely move between those two areas. Engineers often need to work on a problem by themselves and then bring that work to the larger team for additional ideas and solutions. Hiring managers look for candidates who can easily transition between those extremes with the same amount of facility, the same amount of comfort, and ultimately the same amount of success.Unfortunately, these are things that most engineers are not really taught in school, Fasano says. So if you can exhibit any kind of ability in those areas, that will help you stand out. Every engineers going to have a degree. Every engineers going to have technical knowledge. So you have to think about what you might be able to bring to the table that not every engineers going to have.Get Creative Patrick likewise recommends that engineers look outside of the technical side of the field to understand where todays best industry opportunities are. That means knowing whats going on nationally and internationally in the technical, social, and economic worlds.T he bottom line is engineers cannot isolate themselves just within their expertise, he says. They need to develop that expertise, becoming extremely competent in their area of focus. They need to also be broader beyond that and think about how their expertise links to other applications.Think Beyond Todays Jobs In mechanical and civil engineering, there are dozens of existing specializations graduates entering the workforce can explore. But Fasano suggests that the best approach is to look beyond what everyone else is already doing and focus on emerging areas with plenty of future growth potential. Infrastructure is a growth area right now, along with artificial intelligence and anything involving drones or software, he says. Candidates who can develop the right skills to meet these needs will be in high demand for years to come.Firms like Patricks arent just hiring engineers to do todays engineering. Theyre hiring engineers to be part of larger problem solving mechanisms for their c lients. And youre only good at that if you understand the larger playing field and not just the little square that youre standing in, he says.Tim Sprinkle is an independent writer. You have to think about what you might be able to bring to the table that not every engineers going to have.Anthony Fasano, Engineering Management Institute

How to Contribute to a Positive Workplace
How to Contribute to a Positive Workplace How to Contribute to a Positive Workplace How to Contribute to a Positive Workplace How can you contribute to a positive workplace? We break down why it's so important. [TWEET] Creating happy and positive workplaces is one of the biggest challenges organizations face today. We know this because Chief Happiness Officer is now a job. Getting people aligned with a company vision, caring about it, and actually having fun doing it, is a huge undertaking, which is why the responsibility can't just rest on the Chief Happiness Officer's plate, or the CEO's, or your boss's. It's just like a good party. A good party takes into account ambience, physical environment, guests, food, beverages, and favors. But what really makes a good party? The people! The same theory applies to workplaces. What often keeps people in jobs? Their co-workers. With the right attitude, you have the power to create happiness at work, contributing to a positive work place, and to be the type of co-worker who encourages people to not only stay at their jobs, but enjoy them, too. Here's how: 1. Show up. Woody Allen is quoted as saying, 80 percent of life is just showing up and the same goes for your workplace. What does it mean? It means more than physically attending work. Clocking in, clocking out, will not generate workplace happiness and a positive workplace. You need to be present. When we're working 'in the now' you're able to perceive opportunities that are invisible to (your) co-workers who miss out on the power of the now. And in fact, be more successful. Showing up means being open to the now and in the zone to process information without distilling it through the lens of the past or future. This act will help others lean in to what you're doing and encourage them to do the same. 2. Join in. Don't resist the fun, seriously. A study out of Norway found that people who participated in cultural activities like joining a club reported lower levels of anxiety and depression as well as a higher quality of life. In most workplaces, especially in a positive workplace, there are community type activities from social committee, health and safety, volunteer, new hire buddies and more. The great thing about joining in is that not only will you have fun and make yourself happier at work, you'll also be building out your personal brand in the process. Beyond that you'll be leading by example and be able to encourage others to do the same. Think of it this way, if you have a workplace full of Joining-In types you'll have a workplace that's going to satisfy you on more levels than just a paycheck. Joining in is like being the lighthouse to negative people. You do your thing, shine brightly, and soon others (especially those naysayer types) well come into the light, too, and join in. It' s contagious. 3. Speak up. If Joining In is being the lighthouse, then Speaking Up is being the flashlight. Most of the time being the lighthouse is the best way to influence those around you. It's the old, you catch more bees with honey than with vinegar story. Plus, when people 'come into the light' on their own accord, it's way more impactful for them. But then there are the times when you need to encourage them a little more directly. In a work environment, negative people are like mold, and there are times that call for you to protect yourself from the mold by speaking up. Speaking up means calling out unfair behaviour like bullying or harassment. Or, asserting yourself with a negative person and calling out their B.S. Using an assertive communication tactic, you can identify the behavior, what you want, and the impact, without feeling like it's a full-blown confrontation. By doing this, you're influencing not only the parties involved but possibly the greater team, department and company. When we tolerate less bad behavior from others, we inspire others to do the same. If 'everyone' speaks up for the type of work environment they want, it will lead to a more positive, open environment in the long run. Be certain to speak up with diplomacy, grace, and facts. Leave the emotion on the doorstep. 4. Become engaged. You might think I mean flipping on a switch and activating your 'Employee Engagement' button, but I don't. Or, I do. Being engaged with something is a choice. If you disagree, stop reading now. You might be thinking, hey, that's HR's job Or, that's my boss's job! And you're right, too. The way I see it is this: HR Management can create an environment in which employees can choose to be motivated. So, take a look at the company. Examine where they're headed and why, and consider if you're behind it. Are you a believer in the Vision? Sure, you'll have questions like, is that the right boss for the job? Or, will the market respond? But putting that lightly aside, can you get behind it? If you can get behind it, you will be happier at work. Your engagement also goes beyond Mission and Vision. If you're happier, you'll be shining bright and it's a lot easier for others to follow your lead of positivity than to (continue) sulking. 5. Be a leader. You do not need a big title to be a leader. Whether you're entry-level or an executive, you can evoke change from where you stand. It might not be earth shattering change, but you can make someone's work experience better. Whether it's becoming friends with someone and having someone to eat lunch with or brightening up someone's day by recognizing them for a job well done, it is all of our job's to generate team spirit and strengthen company culture. By sharing kudos, high-fives, and being positive in the face of adversity, you will be the kind of person everyone wants on their team - the Lighthouse person. The person whose light shines so brightly that soon enough everyone will be basking in it. Our emotions are all a matter of energy. If we're negative, it's like mold. It'll fester, grow, and spread. If we're positive, it'll shine bright. Other's will seek out it's warmth. By choosing to do something about your work environment, you're choosing to make at least one person happier: you. And think of it this way, in a worst case scenario, epic failure of attempts, you'll only reach one person with your attempts. If you can make one person's work experience better, would you do it? Billionaire Robert F. Smith pays off grads student loans in his commencement address
Billionaire Robert F. Smith pays off grads' student loans in his commencement address Billionaire Robert F. Smith pays off grads' student loans in his commencement address Low-profile private equity billionaire and philanthropist Robert F. Smith, served as the commencement speaker at Morehouse College, a historically black university for men on Sunday, May 19. He spoke on the topics of continuing racial inequality in the US, his career starts as a chemical engineer and investment banker at Goldman Sachs before eventually starting his own private equity firm, Vista Equity Partners. Most empathically, he spoke of the importance of community â" before jolting the graduates out of their chairs with the most surprising and heartwarming news of the weekend.âThis is my class, 2019, and my family is making a grant to eliminate their student loans,â he said. After a moment of slight confusion at what had just happened, the nearly 400 graduates roared and jumped out of their seats.Smith has a history of philanthropy but is famously low-key about it. He is known to avoid interviews and publicity and lives quietly in Austin, TX with his former Playboy-model wife, Hope Dworaczyk Smith.Smith was a major donor to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, according to the Washington Post, donating $20 million before opening (Oprah pledged $21 million.)In 2016, he donated $50 million to his alma mater, Cornell University, for its chemical and biomolecular engineering school, as well as for support for black and female engineering students.Smith said he knew the recipients of his generosity at Morehouse would pay it forward. âWe are enough to take care of our community,â he said. âWe are enough to ensure we have all the opportunities of the American Dream. And we will show it to each other through our actions and our words and our deeds.âBefore Sundayâs graduation speech, Smith had donated $1.5 million to Morehouse for scholarships and a park. You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Creative Teaching Prepares Students for Engineering
Creative Teaching Prepares Students for Engineering Creative Teaching Prepares Students for Engineering Creative Teaching Prepares Students for Engineering John Devitry-Smith faced two big problems while he was teaching introductory mechanical aerospace engineering courses at Utah State University. The first was that too many students just werent ready to tackle the coursework and ended up failing the class. The second was that university administrators, concerned with a steady nationwide decline of the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking scores, were tasking STEM educators like Devitry-Smith to teach students to be more creative and innovative. Developing those attributes, educators and industry leaders agreed, would better prepare young engineers for industrys new demands, especially in understanding and leveraging emerging technologies. It was a tough mission, considering that many students had trouble passing basic engineering classes and, more to the point, many educators had difficulty teaching them. To solve those problems, Devitry-Smith decided to, quite literally, throw away the book. One of my bosses once gave me a book on teaching Engineering 101, and Im like Are you kidding me? he says. Instead of going by the book, he developed online courses for teaching design to high school students as a way to better prepare them for introductory college. Devitry-Smith offers the courses for free on his Gear Up University website and at Udemy.com. A lot of kids get blown out of introductory engineering courses, he says. I put one online class together and it just started taking off. For You: 3D Printing a Future of New Metal Actuators John Devitry-Smith evangelizes new creative teaching techniques So far, more than 20,000 students in 136 countries have taken courses such as Mechanism and Motion- Robotics Focus, Generative Modeling Designer Based Structural Optimization, and Siemens Solid Edge Training Certification for Students. Based on the positive student results and teacher feedback, Devitry-Smith will continue to develop courses based on education and industry demands. Devitry-Smith knows how difficult it is to teach design, creativity and engineering concepts through a book and lecture, a process many students find boring and outdated. Devitry-Smith made sure each of his courses could be taught with few written instructions and minimum teacher intervention. He boiled the lessons down to their simplest forms. In fact, theres hardly any reading or writing required. Almost everything is hands on. The students watch videos, refer to short tutorials, and are encouraged to collaborate and to help each other out. Students dont even have to know 3D CAD before taking the course. They just jump in and start using it, Devitry-Smith says. He based the courses on Conceptual Design Blending (CDB), a proven method that sparks creativity in engineering students. CDB stems from Epsteins Generativity Theory. Developed by American psychologist Robert Epstein in the early 1980s, it suggests that everyone has limitless creative potentials that cultural trends tend to suppress. New ideas, he believed, result from interconnections with old ones. Creativity, he said, could be learned and measured by following four basic strategies: Capturing: Recording new ideas as they occur Challenging: Taking on tasks that remove people from their comfort zones Broadening: Seeking training, experience and knowledge outside a persons field of interest Surrounding: Being conscious of physical and social environments and changing them frequently to find unusual inspiration Gear Up Universitys courses combine CB and Generative Theory as a way of breaking from traditional instruction to promote creative thinking. Take the 3D CAD courses, for example. Instead of assigning designs for students to replicate, instructors will present students with two or more shapes and have them design something new. Students might be shown a capitol Z and the image of basic table and asked to design a new type of table. They may be shown images of a chair and an old desk and asked to combine those with the shape of any number between one and 10. Or they could be asked to combine the shape of a soccer ball and a jewelry case to create a new type of container. The question is, How do I get kids to create? What I hit on is random combinations drive radical innovation, Devitry-Smith says. That concept frustrates students in the beginning. Theyre good at parroting, but when I ask them to create something they dont know what to do. But then Ill draw a cube and a sphere in 3D CAD and combine those shape. Once you show them two or three ideas, its like wow and off they go. In controlled creativity index tests, creativity measures of students that received Devitry-Smiths CDB instruction increased twice as much as students in a control group who received traditional instruction. The test measured skills such as originality, flexibility, fluency, as well as different criteria such as richness of imagery, resistance to premature closure, and unusual visualization. Those creative elements, Devitry-Smith and others say, help to differentiate young engineers in the workplace and improve the competitive edge of the companies that employ them. It also helps when young engineers looking for work have a portfolio featuring interesting and compelling designs. We need people with unique perspectives. We need students and engineers who see things that other people cant, Devitry-Smith says. Employees are looking for kids who can work and think independently. They want kids who can hit the ground running. Gear Up University does more than help students. The courses are designed so that almost any educator can teach them. Thats important today, since so many school districts force educators to teach to the requirements of statewide standardized tests, which leaves very little room for creative teaching, Devitry-Smith says. The courses also make teaching STEM classes a lot easier. Quintin Nethercott teaches physics and computer science at American Preparatory Academy in West Valley, Utah. After seeing one of Devitry-Smiths presentations on Gear Up University courses, he decided to start a 3D CAD modeling elective. It didnt matter that he had hardly any experience teaching engineering-related courses. If it wasnt for Johns program, I wouldnt have done this. The resources make it very easy to teach, he says. The students were able to go through the video tutorials as a class or individually. That made it easier for me to assist students who might be stuck and let others go at their own pace. It made it easier for everyone to learn. The five biggest networking mistakes that unsuccessful people make The five biggest networking mistakes that unsuccessful people make Networking truly is an art.If you donât talk enough, you could be perceived as cold or aloof. If you talk too much, you could be considered unprofessional or self-interested.To do it right, it may help to learn from those who do it exactly wrong.Hereâs what unsuccessful people do when networking. They talk all about themselvesNo one wants to hear you wax poetic about every single one of your accomplishments - or worse, constantly name drop. It gets really old, really fast.So donât be that person. How else will you meet new people?Just remember this: Networking is never a waste of time, as long as you donât squander the opportunities in front of you. So use them wisely and get out of your comfort zone. They talk negatively about peopleYou donât know who you could be talking to, so before you go and insult a person or employer, hold your tongue. You also donât know if youâll have to work with this person down the line, or need their help, so itâs best to treat them h ow youâd like to be treated. But if itâs already too late - meaning, you already put your foot in your mouth - hereâs how to fix a bad impression at work, with some tips that could apply to events. How to Develop a Social Media Policy
How to Develop a Social Media Policy How to Develop a Social Media Policy Your prospective, current, and former employees, customers, and vendors are all hanging out on social media sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flickr. You need to monitor social media to learn what all of these stakeholders are sharing and saying about your company, your employees, and your workplace. Use social media to your companyâs advantage. Shama (Hyder) Kabani, the author of the Zen of Social Media Marketing and the President of Click to Client, a full-service web marketing firm, asks, âWhat are they saying about you, your company, and your practices? Better yet â" how are you responding? Having a social media policy in place does not mean that you get to dictate your image. But, you do get to interact responsibly in the conversation that forms your image. And, you get to help your employees do the same.â Why a social media policy and company best practices are needed Kabani says, âThe world is changing fast, and how we communicate is changing even faster. It isnât just Gen Y that blogs and twitters â" it is a growing phenomenon embraced by all generations. There are great benefits to todayâs technology and its widespread use, but there are also some risks as pointed out by Raj Malik of Network Solutions.â He writes that âunauthorized or inappropriate commentary or posts online can: âGet the Company, and you, in legal trouble with the U.S. and other government agencies, other companies, customers or the general public.âDiminish the Companyâs brand name by creating negative publicity for The Company, owners, and partners, as well as yourself or your team.âCause damage to The Company by releasing non-public information or proprietary information.âCost us the ability to get patents or undermine our competitive advantage.âCost you your job at the Company.â He suggests that most of these wonât trouble companies if employees use common sense and good judgment in their online interaction. 10 Steps to a Social Media Policy Kabani, who has been named one of the top 10 most influential and powerful women in social media, suggests these ten steps to creating your company social media guidelines and strategy. Establish Where Your Company Stands on Social Media Decide where your company stands with respect to their desired relationship with social media. You also need to decide where you stand relative to monitoring employee use of social media. You need to determine how far your company wants to go in utilizing social media for brand recognition, engaging your customers and employees in conversation, and for driving sales.Kabani asks, âWill you choose only to communicate in reaction to what someone else says? Will you be proactive in engaging the community (consumers and bloggers)? Without an overall way of thinking about social media, it can be very hard to create a policy.â Determine What Constitutes Social Media Kabani says that each organization needs to define for their own use what constitutes social media. âWhile a blog and LinkedIn may easily be categorized as social media â" what about online video? What about Twitter? What really constitutes social media? You must have your own (preferably) written definition. This is especially true because new websites and tools emerge all the time. My personal definition of social media is any website or medium (including video) that allows for communication in the open.â Company-Owned Electronics Provided to Employees As with any offline or online content written, used, received, developed, or saved in company-owned electronics provided to employees, clarify who owns what. There is no question, as an example, about a personal blog, written by an employee, on his time. If he leaves your employ, the blog and the content belong to him. But, the content of his company-owned laptop and cell phone, and the content he wrote for the company website, probably belong, by written policy, to the company. In social media, does your company have a Twitter account or a Facebook page, as examples? The company needs to assure that the ownership of these social media accounts belongs to the company, not the employee whose current job assignment includes posting to and monitoring these accounts. Your policy must cover who owns what in the social media sphere. Respect Privacy Rights Keep confidential and proprietary information private. Respect the privacy rights of other employees and your customers. Social media policies must address the issue of keeping proprietary and personal information confidential. Kabani says, âDue to the casual nature of these sites, it is easier to give away key information without realizing it. Even private messages arenât always secure. Each site has its own fallibilities. Itâs best that employees never share any confidential or proprietary information using social media â" either publicly or privately.â Who is Responsible Decide who is responsible for managing and participating in social media. It is important that all employees understand and adhere to the companyâ social media policy while networking in social media online. But, one employee or a team must assume the companyâs public persona and manage company social media efforts. Vigilant to follow and respond to public commentary, praise, or complaints about the company, the employee or team has an official responsibility to respond to social media. While all employees should be encouraged to interact and represent the company brand, in social media, these employees should proactively handle queries, too. Kabani says, âThe best way to find a social media advocate within the company is to seek out the person or team of people who are most passionate about communicating with customers in social media. They may already be doing so without you knowing it. Seek those people out and train them well to represent your brand.â Establish Ground Rules Establish ground rules for employee participation in social media. You walk a fine line with employees. You need to allow employees the freedom to engage in social media, yet protect the company at the same time. Kabani suggests taking a look at Intelâs social media policy which is comprehensive. The Emerging Technology Department at the Air Force has created this flow chart of their own social media guidelines and David Meerman Scott highlights their social media strategy in his blog post. So, examples do exist online. Address of Taboo Topics While your employees probably already exercise good common sense while participating online, your social media policy must specifically address examples of taboo topics. Confidential, proprietary, non-released company information must stay out of social media. Private and personal information about your work and your coworkers and customers must never appear online. The public image of your employees in social media, if they can be associated with your company, does matter. Nastiness, offensiveness, disparaging comments, untruthful statements, demeaning behavior, and illegal substance use, are all examples of behavior your social media policy must address. Monitor the Social Media Sphere Create a system for monitoring the social media sphere. Kabani says, âA social media policy doesnât do much good if you donât actually monitor the space where the conversation is happening. There are plenty of free and paid tools to monitor social media.â Train Your Employees Make training easily available to your employees who want to participate in social media. Kabani suggests, âThink win-win. Nobody likes to be bossed around â" especially when it comes to their own social networking. However, most people are open to learning about how to better leverage these social media sites to further their own careers and brands. Most people who make mistakes online just donât know any better. If you expect your employees to utilize the social networking tools properly, you must provide training. What they put out there isnât just a reflection of the company; it is also a reflection of them. Make it a win-win for everybody.â Social media is expanding with millions of people worldwide interacting in ways that few dreamed possible just a short time ago. Your employees are interacting in social media. Your company should be interacting on social media, too. And, your social media policies and strategies need development now. Take the opportunity to influence the conversation that is occurring around your company and your brand. Donât believe for a minute that the conversation isnât occurring. Jump on the chance to influence the direction â" now.

Engineering Public Policy Symposium Highlights Issues Pertaini... Engineering Public Policy Symposium Highlights Issues Pertaini... Public Policy Symposium Highlights Issues Pertaining to U.S. Innovation and Competitiveness May 11, 2018 The presidents, presidents-elect and executive directors from 45 professional engineering societies co-sponsored and attended the Engineering Public Policy Symposium in Washington, D.C. More than 150 leaders the presidents, presidents-elect and executive directors from 45 professional engineering societies, representing more than two million engineers, recently attended the annual Engineering Public Policy Symposium, which was convened on April 24 on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. This was the 15th year that ASME served as the lead organizer of the event. The symposium is designed to inform and engage leaders of the engineering community on public policy issues that are important to advancing research and technology. The event was held in conjunction with the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Convocation and American Association of Engineering Societies, and was made possible by a grant from the United Engineering Foundation and its Founder Societies: ASME, AIChE, AIME, ASCE and IEEE-USA. ASME President Charla Wise welcomed the leaders of the engineering community and thanked them for their continued participation. Wise informed attendees that the focus of the meeting was on policy priorities pertaining to Federal Investments in Engineering and Science to Spur Innovation and Competitiveness. She briefly discussed some of the findings of the National Science Board report titled Science and Engineering Indicators 2018, released earlier this year, which emphasizes that although the United States continues to be the global leader in science and technology (ST), the U.S. global share of ST activities continues to decline as other nations especially China continue to rise. ASME President Charla Wise and Dr. Walter G. Copan, Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Patrick J. Natale, executive director of the United Engineering Foundation, then introduced the Keynote Speaker, Walter G. Copan, Ph.D., Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Dr. Copan discussed a new initiative titled Unleashing American Innovation and the interactions NIST has been having with the Office of Science and Technology Policy and the interagency National Science and Technology Council, as well as stakeholders in the public and private sectors across the nation to assess and improve the transfer of technology from federally funded RD. Next, IEEE-USA President Sandra Candy Robinson introduced Matt Hourihan, director of the RD Budget and Policy Program at AAAS, who provided an in-depth review of the status of federal funding for science and engineering research, as well as an overview of the presidents proposed budget request for Fiscal Year 2019 (FY19) that was released in February. Hourihan noted that President Trump signed into law a $1.3 trillion spending package in March that included significant increases by Congress for federally sponsored scientific research, infrastructure and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. (Left to right) ASCE President Kristina Swallow moderated a discussion between Stephen Bayless, vice president of Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs with the Intelligent Transportation Society of America, and Robert Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, on the topic âInvesting in Traditional and Innovation Infrastructure.â The past president of AIChE, Maria Burka, then introduced the next panel session, which included ASCE President Kristina Swallow, who moderated a discussion between Stephen Bayless, vice president of Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs with the Intelligent Transportation Society of America, and Robert Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), on Investing in Traditional and Innovation Infrastructure. Bayless discussed smart transportation and autonomous vehicles, as well as other emerging technologies that are changing transportation. Atkinson briefly discussed an ITIF report entitled Investing in Innovation Infrastructure to Restore U.S. Growth. In the report, ITIF makes the case that the U.S. should consider investments in innovation infrastructure, such as scientific and engineering research, which would enable technological advancements and therefore higher productivity and growth levels. Later in the morning, ASME President Charla Wise moderated a panel discussion with officials from key federal research agencies on the topic of Investing in Transformative Technologies. The panel was comprised of Michael F. Molnar, director of the Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST); Dr. Dawn Tilbury, assistant director of the Engineering Directorate with the National Science Foundation; Valri Lightner, deputy director (acting) of the Advanced Manufacturing Office with the Department of Energys Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy; and Eric Lightner, director of the Federal Smart Grid Task Force with the Department of Energys Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability. Michael Molnar and Valri Lightner discussed how advanced manufacturing technologies and the work of the Manufacturing USA Institutes enable crosscutting innovation in a variety of engineering disciplines. Dr. Tilbury discus sed NSFs 10 Big Ideas, which are meant to catalyze interest and investment in fundamental research, which is the basis for discovery, invention and innovation. Finally, Eric Lightner discussed enabling a more secure and reliable electric grid, including resilience against cybersecurity threats and extreme weather events. (Left to right) ASME President Charla Wise moderated the panel session, âInvesting in Transformative Technologies,â featuring speakers Michael Molnar of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Dawn Tilbury of the National Science Foundation, Valri Lightner of the Department of Energyâs Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and Eric Lightner of the Department of Energyâs Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability. To conclude the event, John Speer, Ph.D., AIME president, introduced two ASME Congressional Fellows: Andrew Bicos, Ph.D. serving in Congressman Tom Reeds (R-NY) office, and Shawn Moylan, Ph.D., serving in the office of Senator Gary Peters (D-MI). Tanya Das, an Optical Society of America-International Society for Optical Engineering/AAAS Fellow serving in Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) office, joined Dr. Bicos and Dr. Moylan to discuss the opportunities and challenges the Fellowships provided, as well as the broad issues portfolios they addressed. In particular, they emphasized the bipartisanship they encountered in moving legislation forward. At the end of the symposium, several attendees took the opportunity to meet with their members of Congress in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate to strengthen their relationships with policymakers, inform them of the importance of investments in federally funded research and development, as well as to offer their services as a technical resource to policymakers. 7 Signs Youre Underpaid And How to Earn More Now
7 Signs Youâre Underpaid â" And How to Earn More Now 7 Signs Youâre Underpaid - And How to Earn More Now Accepting less money than youâre worth has serious repercussions. As career coach Angela Copeland explains, âBeing chronically underpaid is a serious problem. You may not think much about it now, but if you start out underpaid and then your company gives you just a two or three percent raise each year, youâre going to be way behind by the time you hit mid-career.â Whatâs more, because many companies base their salary offers not on their own pay scales but on what you were previously paid, âbeing underpaid now can very well mean being underpaid in the future,â Copeland says. But thereâs good news! With the warning signs below, itâs easier than ever to spot if youâre earning less than youâre worth- and if so, Copeland can help you negotiate a higher salary , stat. Here are seven signs youâre underpaid, and how you can earn the money you deserve right now. Glassdoor has a salary tool that allows you to search by job, company and location to find out what others Glassdoor users are paid in your same position or place. Use the tool to search with various criteria, then come up with a salary average with the information you discover. If youâre earning less than the estimate, the chances are that youâre underpaid. âGlassdoor also provides an online tool that helps you to track your value by the job in your local market,â says Copeland. âIt emails you as your market value goes up or down to show what other people at your level are making in your local area.â With these alerts, itâs effortless to stay on top of what you should be paid, as well as when itâs time to negotiate a raise. Copeland remembers a time when she disclosed her pay to a coworker- who replied those digits were less than she had expected. âThis person was the employee who processed the financials for our department, so they had the inside scoop on what everyone was making,â Copeland says. âThe comment gave me a heads up to do research and to start negotiating.â There can be a downside to dedication. âIf you have stayed at the same company for more than five years, thereâs a chance you may be underpaid,â Copeland warns. âMany companies provide the largest financial incentives to new hires, rather than existing employees.â âIf your dollar isnât going as far as it used to for the same expenses, thereâs a chance youâre underpaid,â Copeland says. When running errands like grocery shopping or buying gas, ask yourself: can I buy what I usually do with the same amount? A Google search will also tell you exactly what the inflation rate has been in recent years. (This year, itâs projected at 1.9 percent.) According to Copeland,âIf you have switched to a higher paid industry - such as from nonprofit to for-profit- and your new employer-based your new salary on your old salary,â then thereâs a good chance your new employer took advantage of an unrelated and too-low salary. Think back to when you received your job offer : did you negotiate the starting pay? âAlmost never does a company come out with their best offer first,â Copeland explains. âIf you arenât asking for more, chances are youâre leaving money on the table.â Luckily, no matter the reason youâre underpaid, your opportunities are the same: according to Copeland, you can keep your current salary, ask for a raise, or seek a new employer . If you choose to remain mum, then you have no course of action (Although we recommend you take steps to get the salary you deserve!) If you would like to see a spike in your salary and to stay at your current place of employment, âYou need to make a good case about why you deserve a higher salary,â says Copeland. For example, if youâve recently taken on more responsibility or even received a promotion , then you have excellent reasons to ask for a raise. âRarely will your boss want to offer you more money to do the same job,â Copeland points out. âYour performance evaluation can be a great time to make your case for more money and more responsibility.â On the other hand, if you choose to switch companies, Copeland urges you to be prepared. âYou need to do your salary research in advance. During a job interview, your salary is one of the first questions HR will ask you. Not being prepared on the front end can hurt you.â Use the tools mentioned above to find out what you should be paid and your worth. Then, come to an interview armed with that information. âTo be fairly compensated in the future, you need to negotiate for more during your next interview,â Copeland says. Donât be afraid to ask for a big bump in an initial offer, using your salary research as a negotiating tool.
